Northchase ESL & English Bible Study 5-26-09

Isn't She So Cute!!

The ESL and Bible Study went great tonight.  We had 22 people for the ESL and 18 for the Bible Study.  Nancy made cupcakes, and we are grateful to offer a variety of refreshments each week. We're thrilled that a good number of people were not there because they finally have jobs from what we were told, so praise God for that.  We pray the Lord will use the impact we have had on all of these people for our humiliation, their good, and His glory.  As for the class, we went through School and Musical Items, and their understanding of English has noticeably progressed each week.

Our Humble Buffet

On To Class

The Pros at Work

We have consistently had about 20 people for the Bible study for the past 3 weeks, which is a great blessing.  This week we studied Romans 2:16-22. All will face the judgment of Christ, whether having the letter of the Law or possessing the Law written on the human conscience.  Both Jew and Gentile are condemned without Christ.  May each of these people read the New Testaments that have been given to them, and may we continue to impart the Word of God simply and graciously to these people.  The use of illustrations fuels this ability by His grace, and may He use all of these teaching tools to bring men and women to Him.  We ask for everyone to pray that God would do a mighty work in the hearts of these people.   May the Lord continue to use this special ministry each week as we seek to serve Him in all we do.

To Him be the glory! Amen!

Northchase ESL & English Bible Study 5-19-09

We had an awesome turn out yet again!  Nancy Henderson provided a wonderful cake that was totally consumed, and we always welcome anyone to bake, cook, or bring refreshments for our famished stomachs. Roberto taught and led the ESL tonight; he did an excellent job, so hats off to Roberto.  Tonight was week 10, and we studied weather and exercise/sports.  In all, there were about 25-30 adults and 5-8 children there for the ESL.

The Bible study went off without a hitch, and we continue to pray for these people.  There were about 20-25 adults and a 3-5 children that remained there for the Bible study, so praise God for that! We continue to go through Romans, and we dove into Romans 2:1-11 tonight focusing on God's impartial judgment.  Christ alone can clean our hearts; truly, our own efforts amount to nothing but filthy rags. May the Lord continue to use us as effective instruments to move the hearts of these Latino & Nepali people.  May they turn to worship Christ and be saved from sin and eternal death.

To Him be all the glory, honor, and praise! Let us glorify Christ the Lord, He who is Lord of lords and King of kings! Amen!

The Great Divorce Remarried Part 2: Geology

A lot of water over a little time or little water over a long time?

That was the geological hot-button in the late 18th century through the beginning of the 19th. Before the advent of uniformitarian thought in the West, most geologic structures in the Western Christianity were interpreted through a Young Earth & a recent Global Flood lens.  Though the specifics were not known, this was the general way of thinking because the people, including the scientists (like Newton), took the Bible as the ultimate authority source, especially during and after the Reformation.  Now they knew that the Bible did not go into detail on such issues, but the historical reality of the Flood would leave reminders.

However, as the Scripture was being attacked by humanistic thinking on theologic and philosophic grounds, it was also being attacked on historical grounds.  When the history of the Bible in Genesis was denied, a wide range of emerging scientific philosophies took root. The predominant view popularized by Charles Lyell in the 19th century was uniformitarianism. Uniformitarianism is the scientific model that the present is the key to the past--i.e. most geologic structures are formed slowly over eons of time.  However, Lyell was no mere unbiased objector of the truth.  On the contrary, not only was he a rabid anti-Christian, he pushed his philosophy of uniformitarianism with great veracity, and many people bought into it. Alleged great eons of time was now theoretically available to then push the molecules to man evolution, and this is exactly what spearheaded Darwinian thought several decades later. Macroevolution (molecules to man) was already being propagated, but Darwin could popularize the teaching because of Lyell's time scale.

We deny that the earth is billions of years old and uphold the Global Flood because of our commitment to Scripture.  Nonetheless, how has this theory of uniformitarianism stacked up in the scientific community?  Not to our surprise, many evolutionary scientists themselves deny that the earth has come to be slowly one sand grain at a time by one drop of water at at time.  Though most of them believe the earth is old, due to other philosophic assumptions they make, they do acknowledge that the geologic layers are filled with catastrophe.  Mass fossil graveyards are interpreted as occurring through catastrophic events.

We should not be surprised when we see evidence for a global catastrophe because that is exactly what is recorded in Scripture, primarily through the Genesis Flood.  We interpret such catastrophic layering, fossil formation, mountain building, and canyon erosion through the lens of Scripture.  Much of the upper level topography that we observe today is best interpreted as being caused by the Flood or by post-Flood events like the Ice-Age and subsequent smaller local scale catastrophes.

As for geologic structures like the Grand Canyon, we can best understand them through Biblical glasses. Only the Scriptures give us a reliable lens to interpret the world, and, though our scientific models are modified at times, the general creation model itself is sustained by Scripture.  Though it is difficult do delineate exactly what may have been formed during creation week and what has been formed after that through the Flood, we can get a general idea.  Much of the upper layers of the canyon are formed through rapid sedimentation laid down by water.  We can see this through 'bent layering', which is to say that we see many layers flowing together and then bent in one or many directions while still soft.  This must of have occurred rapidly while soft; otherwise, the layers would have been crushed upon themselves.

As for the canyon itself, it is likely that it formed after the layers had been laid down during the Flood. Sometime before and at the end of the Flood or most probably after the Flood, giant inland lakes once existed in that area (as understood through topographical scars of such lakes).  There was a breached dam of some sort, it appears, and this could have occurred at the end of the Ice Age.  As the glaciers began to melt, large quantities of water would fill these lakes by means of rivers and such.  Eventually the lakes would have overflowed, and a water pouring out by means of a massive catastrophic breached dam would have carved out the Grand Canyon.

The Bible had it right all along! Amen!

The Great Divorce Remarried Part 1

For the last two centuries evolutionary old-earth thinking has blasted at the roots of Christianity, and this started in Genesis.  Sadly, the Church (being heavily influenced by humanist thinking beforehand) caved in and began to compromise the Word of God in numerous areas.  Truly, "If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Ps 11:3)  Christ cannot be our Redeemer if He is not first our Sovereign Creator, which John 1:1-3 explicitly states.

What happens when Biblical Authority is denied? Sin runs wild, and man plunges into further darkness as a result.  How did this occur in the West?  Sin took root through evolutionary humanistic old-earth dogma; this was brought upon us from atheists, agnostics, and deists of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries who hated everything Scriptural.  A Great Divorce then occurred between the theology of the Bible and how we interpret the natural world around us.  Sadly, the clergy caved in to this, lest they be considered outdated and un-educated. Instead of interpreting the natural world through a Biblical lens, the authority, sufficiency, inerrancy, and inspiration of Holy Scripture was denied. In its place, atheistic old-earth evolutionary humanism erected itself as the new lens by which all things should be interpreted through.  The ramifications took hold quickly, and the West plunged itself into moral anarchy and lawlessness.

Nevertheless, God's Word is the Only True Authority by which to understand all of reality, and His Word never returns empty and always accomplishes its purpose (Is 55:11). Praise God for His powerful Word! Amen!  How then do we remarry the Bible with historical and scientific reality again?  Many Christians fight issues like abortion and rightly so, but they do so without the underpinnings of Biblical Authority from Genesis to Revelation.  We must begin by asserting all of the Bible as authoritative from beginning to end.  The Bible is not a physics textbook, but, when it speaks on matters of biology, geology, history, etc., it is always absolutely without error.

Therefore, we must begin to rebuild the foundations that have been beaten down as we raise God's Word to its rightful position of authority (Is 58:12)! Amen!  We are then able to box without our hands tied behind our backs.  Instead, we attack the root of godlessness, which is sin, however that is manifested, and then launch heavily against the fruits of godlessness at the same time! Amen!

To Him be the glory! Amen!

Northchase ESL & English Bible Study 5-12-09

Tonight was awesome!  We had a great turnout for the ESL (about 30 adults and 5-8 children), and the people are really starting to remember their English.  Living in America helps that because they are immersed in an English speaking culture.  We continue to have a large consistent group, and we get to know them a bit more each week.  We keep it jovial and try not to take ourselves to seriously.  We encourage participation, and the market is always fun and educational at the same time.

Regarding the Bible Study, we had a phenomenal turn out (about 25 adults and 3-4 children), and we are so excited about how they appear to be understanding what we are communicating.  We do this through both words and pictures, and the Lord continues to honor our faithfulness in this.  We gave out numerous Nepali New Testaments, and several more Spanish/English New Testaments, Psalm, & Proverbs.

O Lord, we do ask that you continue to open the hearts of these men, women, and children that they might glorify you. May they repent of their sin, and leave the idols of this world.  There is no joy in idolatry; you hate it and condemn it.  However, through Christ you can make a man's heart clean.  Ultimately, You and You alone O Lord can do this marvelous work, and we are thankful to be part of Your great Kingdom.  To Him be the glory forever! Amen!

My Wife: My First Ministry

In the current era, 'ministry' has taken on a definition that it was never meant to take. Ministry as defined today has ushered in a theology that separates the pastor from his family. The rise of the 'professional' clergy has fueled this notion. After all, any other 'profession' does not take work home for the most part. However, when it comes to pastors, this is not Biblical. In reality, according to Titus, a primary qualification of an elder/pastor is related to home life. If a man is not leading his family Biblically, then he certainly ought not lead the local congregation. If he is not loving his wife and raising his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, then why would anyone expect him to do the same for the local flock?

For this reason, I am called to shepherd my family first and foremost, with my first ministry being towards my wife. In God's Providence, He has designed the husband-wife relationship to display the relationship between Christ and the Church. God will use our testimony together much more powerfully than He will through any sermon I preach or lecture I give. This does not negate preparation for sermons, but it does remind me that home life must never be neglected. If I'm not loving my wife as Christ loved the Church, then I am denying the greatest God-ordained testimony God has given to us (
Ephesians 5).

Therefore, when times get tight, it is critical that I never put my wife on the back burner behind everyone else, for that does not glorify God but rather weakens our family unit and discredits the Church. When the local congregation or the Church at large sees its leaders having strong family relationships, they, in turn, recognize the power of the gospel to change lives. A pastor can preach about family all day, but if he neglects his own, then his message becomes impotent and lacks credibility. The Lord can still use any message, for His Word never returns void, yet, in the Providence of God He has ordained both the means and the ends.

To Him be the glory in all things! Amen!

Happy Mother's Day

Grandma, Mama, Me, Moriah

Mother's Day is an opportunity for everyone to remember the one who gave us birth. Yeah, I don't want to go through that! It is a reminder not to take our mother's for granted, which is easy to do. We pray for our mother's, and we ought to be thankful for them.

Now that I have changed many diapers, I am all the more thankful for what my mother did when I was a small child. It's not easy doing the day in and day out parental duties without complaint. What's even harder is to show God's love to a child, for we can become discontent very easily when the child does not obey. For this reason, a good spanking was always necessary for me, and my mother wasn't afraid to apply punishment when needed. For my brother and I, this was necessary nearly every day, yet all of those spankings were not in vain, for that discipline was done in love and not hate or anger.

In a day when so many parents abandon their children through career, drugs, etc., I am thankful that my mother did not abandon us physically or emotionally. She made us a priority, and I believe the Lord has honored that in the way we turned out. Ultimately, only God change the heart, but God's means is especially made known in parenting, whether early or later years.

I love you mom! Happy Mother's Day!

Defining Success at Northchase

In the current era, Christianity tends to define success in numbers, but is that Biblical?  What does the Scripture say?  It is true that people from all tribes, nations, and tongues will be in heaven.  The Bible also calls this a multitude of people, which is by definition a large number of people.  However,  the Bible does not measure our success as Christians based on how many people are saved by what we do.  How then does it measure our success?

Throughout Scripture, we read again and again how faithfulness is considered righteous, and Paul goes to great lengths in Romans 4 especially.  Abraham was called a friend of God not because he produced immediate results; on the contrary he was called a friend of God because he was faithful even when times appeared destitute.  Actually, when we tried to force the blessed offspring to come of his own will and working, things went down hill.  However, after the fiasco with Hagar, Abraham continued to remain faithful, and God intervened in His time when Isaac was brought forth.  Therefore this was credited to Abraham as righteous (Rom 4).

We can then go through the Hebrews Faith Hall of Fame and elaborate on this.  Abel was faithful, and he was killed.  Noah was a preacher of righteousness, yet but 8 people were saved in the Flood!  We've already mentioned Abraham.  The many prophets were killed by sword and even sawn in two.  Jeremiah preached against the ungodliness of his generation, yet they refused to repent.  All of these great saints are made great by the grace of God through faith and not of any work of themselves.

How then does this apply to us today at Northchase?  First of all, God commands us to evangelize, and we have a great desire to do exactly that because of His grace in us.  We did not know what that would look on a broad scale in our community, but we prayed for the Lord do open up a door in His time.  By His grace, He did.  Through several contacts the Lord has used, we have been working at Northchase for about 2 months.  Now that we are there, our success in God's eyes is measured by our faithfulness to preach the good news, and we are to do so with truth and love while meeting the people's physical needs at the same time.  We have seen the Lord work through the hearts of these people week by week, and we are thrilled that the Nepali people in particular have just been given New Testaments in their own language!  And when they have stayed for the English Bible study, it is amazing to see how they react at the good news that have probably never heard before!

We pray for jobs of those to whom we have been teaching, and those jobs may lead them to other areas at different times, but for them not to be able to return to the ESL and the Bible study that we are doing for such reasons ought never be counted as a failure.  Quite the opposite, it is rather the work going on there by means His sufficient grace through our faithful prayers that such wonderful things have happened.  In this way, God gets all the glory in His time!  We then fall at his feet in absolute worship as we marvel at what He has already done and continues to do! Amen!

Our ultimate goal then is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever by which we do this through loving Him and loving neighbor.  We many never see one conversion at Northchase and they all may leave tomorrow, but God will count our faithfulness as righteous, and for that we shall never be ashamed.  To Him be all the glory forever! Amen!

Norchase ESL, English Bible Study Week 8

Everything went well tonight. Roberto's wife Terri came tonight for the first time, and she was a wonderful help. May the Lord continue to bring people into the work we are doing at Northchase.

The same people are still coming consistently, so praise God for that. Cinco de Mayo too k a number of Latino folks out as expected. Nonetheless, we still had 27 adults for the ESL and 8-10 people stay for the English Bible Study. The ones who have been coming consistently have increased in their English speaking ability, so that is encouraging. Everyone continues to enjoy the market that we do at the end of the ESL, and we try to keep it light-hearted and fun. Our set up has worked well thus far; having the inital teaching, then small groups, and lastly the market helps break up the monotony of it all. Ultimately, we truly want to meet both their physical and spiritual needs.

Some New Unexpected Growth It Appears

We continue to pray for these people, and we gave out several Nepali New Testaments tonight. We pray the Lord would use His Word to convict the hearts of these people that they would repent and believe in Christ alone for salvation. We spoke on idols tonight coming out of Romans 1:18-25, and I think they had some understanding of what we were trying to communicate. Because they are probably Hindu and thus polytheistic, we pray that they don't merely adopt Jesus as another god among many. On the contrary, He is King of kings and Lord of lords! Let us therefore bow before Him in all adoration, seeking to know Him above all things! To Him be the glory forever! Amen!

How has reclaiming Biblical Authority, especially in Genesis, influenced our fallen world today?

As Biblical Authority has been reclaimed, hearts have been changed to the glory of God, for evangelism has gone full steam ahead.  Hope has been restored, and the elect of God continue to be called out to worship Him in great numbers.

God always preserves a remnant, and organizations like the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors continue to spearhead a movement to now reclaim the Sufficiency of Scripture in evangelism, discipleship, and wise counsel.  We need not refer lost sinners and troubled saints to the secular world for help; we have the Word of God! Amen!

As Genesis is defended with greater fervor, research groups like the RATE Team (Radio Isotopes and the Age of the Earth) cause the evolutionists to scrape the bottom of the barrel as they search for something to throw back.  When facts run out, name-calling is used, yet the saints grow in their confidence and conviction of Holy Scripture each day, and God is glorified in their bold strength which He supplies during persecution.

How has Biblical Authority begun to be reasserted in today?

Many Conservative Orthodox Evangelicals have gone back to the Scriptures and submitted to the historicity of the Biblical text. They have reasserted Biblical Manhood and Womanhood along with the Sufficiency of Scripture to give wise counsel.  However, the Genesis issues must continue to be fought for, so ministries like Answers in Genesis and The Institute for Creation Research continue to press hard against naturalistic science which seeks to undermine the Days of Creation and Genesis Flood.  Incredible original research from the RATE (Radio Isotopes and the Age of the Earth) Team, has given Old-Earth Scientists much to wrestle with as the evidence pours in against an eons old earth and universe.

Reasserting Biblical Authority In Reclaiming the Gospel of Grace

In light of all that tragedy in and out of the Church in the past two centuries, how do we even attempt to reclaim the message of God's good grace to undeserving sinners?.  We do so by reclaiming and reasserting Biblical Authority.  And though many devout Bible believing Christians have done so in most parts of Scripture, many still compromise with naturalism in the early chapters of Genesis regarding the Days of Creation and the Genesis Flood.  If we do not assert Biblical Authority in Genesis 1-11, we will likely repeat the same mistakes as those during the early 19th Century.

We must not be afraid to take ridicule when we assert a literal six day 24 hr creation week and Genesis Flood.  In reality, it is only through the Biblical lens that our present geology makes sense.  As Ken Ham says, "If there was a Global Flood, what would we expect to find?  Billions of dead things buried in rock layers all over the earth.  And what do we find?  Billions of dead things buried in rock layers all over the earth."  The problem is never the Scripture, the problem is that man's fallible ideas both contradict Scripture and give us a false understanding of the world.

What have been the long-term devastating effects of compromising Biblical Authority in Genesis during the 19th century?

Man will seek any means by which to justify his sin, and when he thought he could scientifically deny the Scriptures, he did so.  Tragically, as Biblical Authority collapsed in the mind of the Church, so did Christianity in the West.  Racism spread throughout the world on the back of Darwinian Evolution, and the Church was no exception.  The rise in euthanasia, abortion, sexual perversion, etc. dominated the landscape.

It was not long before Aborigines in Australia and Pygmies in Africa were murdered, stuffed, and put on display as transitional ape-men.  The Church did nothing as it was embroiled in racist inclinations of its own.  Nazism, Communism, and the like began to take root and the soil became red as crimson as the world watched in horror.  Today, abortion on demand, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual perversion, and other vile deeds occur at unprecedented rates.
